Pompiliu Piso, MD, Krankenhaus Barmherzige Brüder Regensburg, Regensburg, Germany, discusses the ongoing debate surrounding the role of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in combination with surgery, a treatment that has been in use for over 30 years. While early studies and charismatic surgeons helped establish the procedure, recent negative studies have raised questions about its effectiveness and the potential for improving administration methods, including laparoscopy and port-based delivery. The debate remains unresolved and can only be fully addressed through Phase III clinical trials. This interview took place at the ESSO 43 congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
