In this latest episode of the VJOncoAlert Journal Club, Berend J van der Wilk, MD PhD, Erasmus MC Cancer Institute, Rotterdam, Netherlands, discusses the SANO trial, a multicenter, non-inferiority, stepped wedge cluster, randomized trial investigating the efficacy of active surveillance versus standard resection after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced esophageal cancer. Dr van der Wilk highlights that patients who underwent active surveillance had non-inferior overall survival and comparable disease-free survival compared to standard surgery, with approximately 40-50% of patients eventually requiring esophagectomy due to local regional residual disease.
