WCM/EADO 2021 | Alternatives to Mohs surgery for lentigo maligna

Ricardo Vieira, MD, PhD, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal, discusses his presentation on alternatives to Mohs surgery for lentigo maligna at the 10th World Congress of Melanoma held in conjunction with the 17th EADO Congress Interactive Virtual Meeting. The challenges of performing Mohs surgery in lentigo maligna include the correct recognition of malignant cells in the margin of the tumor using frozen sections. To overcome this, an alternative is the use of hematoxylin & eosin (H&E)- stained specimens. However, this histopathologic analysis takes more time. To avoid long time wound exposure until the H&E histopathology results are available, Prof. Vieira proposes the use of the perimeter technique.
