Robert Hsu, MD, Keck School of Medicine, USC, Los Angeles, CA, discusses the future of personalized cancer treatment in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), highlighting advancements in understanding EGFR and KRAS G12C mutations in relation to estrogen receptors (ER), specifically ER-alpha (ESR1) and ER-beta (ESR2). For example, in breast cancer, ESR1 inhibitors such as FDA-approved elacestrant are already established. This prompts exploring the potential of combining ESR1 inhibitors with existing tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as osimertinib in the clinic, to leverage synergistic effects and potentially improving outcomes for patients with NSCLC.
