ESMO GI 2026 | GALAXY: upfront surgery with adjuvant chemotherapy improved outcomes in MRD+ patients with CRC
Kozo Kataoka, MD, Hyogo Medical University, Nishinomiya, Japan, presents findings from the prospective GALAXY study (UMIN000039205), which evaluated the prognostic impact of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in resectable colorectal cancer (CRC) in patients that received upfront surgery with adjuvant chemotherapy and patients that received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. In the upfront surgery cohort, adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with improved overall survival in molecular residual disease (MRD)-positive patients, whilst no significant benefit was seen in MRD-negative patients. Whilst results indicate that MRD status could define which patients will benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy, this is a non-randomized trial with regional confounding factors, and therefore prospective evaluation is required. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer 2026 Congress in Munich, Germany.
