ASCO 2021 | Racial disparities in breast cancer

Erica Michelle Stringer-Reasor, MD, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL, discusses disparities in treating breast cancer and clinical trial enrollment. Participation in breast cancer trials is low, with less than 10% of patients with breast cancer participating in clinical trials, and only 1-3% of black patients enrolling in clinical trials. Racial disparities additionally exist in mortality rates, with black patients having a mortality rate of 40% then white patients. Dr Stringer-Reasor also briefly discusses barriers that prevent more patients from participating in clinical trials. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2021 Virtual Meeting.
