ASCO 2025 | HIPPORAD: hippocampal avoidance in WBRT shows cognitive & mood benefits

Anca-Ligia Grosu, MD, University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany, discusses the Phase II HIPPORAD trial (DRKS00004598), which investigated hippocampal-sparing whole-brain radiotherapy with a simultaneous integrated boost (WBRT+SIB) versus standard WBRT+SIB without hippocampal-sparing in patients with multiple brain metastases. While short-term cognitive outcomes were similar, hippocampal avoidance showed favorable trends in memory recovery at later timepoints and was associated with significantly lower depression rates. Both approaches achieved high tumor control, but hippocampal-avoidance was linked to fewer neurological deaths, supporting its potential for improving neurocognitive and oncologic outcomes. This interview took place during the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Meeting in Chicago, IL.
