ASCO 2023 | Molecular classification of pulmonary carcinoid and large cell NETs

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC-WHO), Lyon, France, discusses the heterogeneity of pulmonary carcinoid and large cell neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), and attempts to group these carcinomas. There are three broad groups, which these lung neuroendocrine neoplasm scan fall under, which are based on molecular analysis. One group is defined by genomic characteristics similar to non-small cell lung cancer and has defining mutations such as KEAP1, KRAS, and STK11, whereas another group has a non-endocrine transcriptomic profile. The third group is characterized as small-cell lung cancer-like, due to inactivation of TP53 and RB1, and has an endocrine-like transcriptomic profile. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
