Marc Mureau, MD, PhD, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam, Netherlands, discusses a recent study examining the potential risk of breast cancer recurrence in patients who received implant-based breast reconstruction using macro-textured silicone breast implants (SBIs). Previous studies suggested a higher chance of distant metastasis with these implants, raising concerns. However, Prof. Mureau’s research, which involved a larger cohort of several thousand patients with a longer follow-up period, found no increased risk of local, regional, or distant recurrence. These findings provide reassurance that macro-textured implants do not adversely impact long-term oncologic outcomes in breast cancer patients. This interview took place at the ESSO 43 Congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
