ESMO 2024 | Limited advances in second-line treatments for metastatic ESCC

David Tougeron, MD, PhD, Poitiers University Hospital, Poitiers, discusses the current treatment landscape for metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (mESCC). Immune checkpoint inhibitors such as nivolumab and pembrolizumab are used in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin as a first-line therapy. However, there are no new targeted options available, and the efficacy of second-line treatments remains poor, with no promising new treatments on the horizon. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
