ESMO 2024 | Current and future HER2+, HR- metastatic breast cancer treatment approaches

Wolfgang Janni, MD, PhD, University of Ulm, Ulm, Germany, discusses current treatments for HER2-positive, HR-positive metastatic breast cancer (mBC), which includes taxane-based chemotherapy (paclitaxel and docetaxel) with dual HER2 blockade (pertuzumab and trastuzumab), the standard of care for HER2+, HR- mBC. The Phase III DETECT V trial (NCT02344472) explores an alternative approach, combining HER2-targeted therapy with endocrine treatment, avoiding upfront chemotherapy. The study amendment introduces ribociclib in both treatment arms, potentially enhancing outcomes for patients with HER2-positive, HR-positive mBC. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
