Gabriele Zoppoli, MD, PhD, University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy, comments on the role of age as a biomarker in identifying targetable mutations in advanced breast cancer patients over 65. Certain mutations in genes such as BRCA2 and CARD11 are more prevalent in older patients. Using age-based stratification, clinicians can prioritize this subgroup for targeted therapies, which may offer an effective, less toxic alternative to traditional chemotherapy, which is especially beneficial for elderly patients, who are more vulnerable to treatment-related side effects. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
