ESSO 43 | Exploring the evolving role of D2 dissection in GC treatment and challenges in accurate staging

Mitsuru Sasako, MD, PhD, Yodogawa Christian Hospital, Osaka, Japan, discusses the challenges in demonstrating the benefit of D2 dissection in gastric cancer treatment. Initial studies showed no benefit due to high postoperative mortality rates. However, improved surgical techniques and quality control led to lower mortality, revealing a potential benefit of D2 dissection. Further studies comparing D1 and D2 dissection showed no statistically significant difference, largely due to a high proportion of T1 tumors where the difference in surgical approaches is less impactful. Accurate staging remains a significant challenge in assessing the true benefit of D2 dissection. This interview took place at the ESSO 43 congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
