ASCO GI 2025 | STARTER-NET: everolimus + lanreotide for gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumor

Susumu Hijioka, MD, PhD, National Cancer Center, Tokyo, Japan, and Nobumasa Mizuno, MD, PhD, Aichi Cancer Center Hospital, Nagoya, Japan, present findings on the efficacy of combining everolimus with lanreotide in treating gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (GEP-NET), a type of neuroendocrine tumor. Dr Hijoka highlights that this combination therapy significantly prolonged progression-free survival (PFS) and was well-tolerated, with a hazard ratio of 0.74, suggesting consistency in PFS and overall survival (OS) between the two arms. This study suggests that everolimus plus lanreotide can be a new standard first-line treatment for patients with GEP-NET, particularly those with non-functioning tumors and poor prognostic factors, paving the way for future trials to broaden the indication to more aggressive cases. This interview took place at the ASCO GI Cancers Symposium 2025 in San Francisco, CA.
