ESSO 43 | Exploring tumor microenvironment insights to advance personalized cancer treatment strategies

Gizem Öner, MD, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Türkiye, discusses the evolving landscape of personalized cancer treatment, focusing on the increasing importance of understanding tumor microenvironment components like tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) for predicting patient outcomes and tailoring treatment strategies. She highlights that while TIL analysis is becoming more common in pathology, TAM analysis is still under development due to cost and the need for further research. The ultimate goal is to use this information to personalize treatment and improve patient survival. This interview took place at the ESSO 43 congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
