ASCO GI 2025 | Insights from JCOG trials: chemoradiotherapy as an alternative to surgery in ESCC
Motoo Nomura, MD, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, discusses the role of chemoradiotherapy and surgery in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) treatment, referencing key JCOG trials. While previous studies, such as JCOG1406, JCOG9907, and JCOG9906, suggested that chemoradiotherapy (CRT) resulted in shorter overall survival, it remains a potential option for patients who are ineligible or refuse surgery. The JCOG0909 trial evaluated CRT, showing that overall survival was not significantly inferior to neoadjuvant CRT plus surgery. These findings suggest that CRT could be considered a viable alternative in select patient populations. This interview took place at the ASCO GI Cancers Symposium 2025 in San Francisco, CA.
