Motoo Nomura, MD, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, discusses advancements in neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), building on previous studies evaluating neoadjuvant chemotherapy plus surgery followed by adjuvant S-1, an oral cytotoxic chemotherapy drug. The ongoing SUNRISE trial (JCOG2206, jRCTs031230219) investigates neoadjuvant DCF (docetaxel, cisplatin, and fluorouracil) plus surgery followed by three post-surgical arms: observation, adjuvant nivolumab, and adjuvant S-1. Early findings suggest that cytotoxic adjuvant therapy offers benefits, though a direct comparison between neoadjuvant nivolumab and surgical-based treatments is not yet available. Dr Nomura also mentions ongoing trials evaluating chemoradiotherapy combined with immunotherapy, with hopes that this approach will lead to better survival outcomes. This interview took place at the ASCO GI Cancers Symposium 2025 in San Francisco, CA.
