EAU 2025 | The role of XRT in isolated pelvic recurrences after RC in bladder cancer

Comron Hassanzadeh, MD, MPH, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, discusses the value of postoperative radiotherapy (XRT) in isolated pelvic recurrences after radical cystectomy (RC) in bladder cancer. Emerging data suggest radiation therapy can offer a local recurrence-free survival benefit, particularly in patients with high-risk features or positive pelvic recurrence. Studies such as BART trial (NCT02951325) have shown adjuvant radiotherapy such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), is relatively safe, with low rates of grade 3 toxicities, and may be a viable option for patients who are not candidates for adjuvant immunotherapy due to toxicities. This interview took place at the 2025 European Association of Urology (EAU) Congress in Madrid, Spain.
