ESMO Breast 2025 | MATADOR: predicting adjuvant chemotherapy response in early breast cancer

Mark Opdam, The Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, Netherlands, shares insights from a biomarker analysis to the MATADOR trial (ISRCTN61893718), which explored the use of immunohistochemical biomarkers to help predict adjuvant chemotherapy response in early breast cancer. In the triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subgroup, high EZH2 expression was associated with improved survival following taxane-based therapy. Additionally, a correlation was observed between EZH2 expression and stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (sTILs), particularly where both biomarkers were elevated and fewer adverse events occurred with taxane treatment. This interview took place at the 2025 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Breast Cancer Annual Congress in Munich, Germany.
