ASCO 2026 | Why HER2 testing matters in newly diagnosed biliary tract cancer

Choong-kun Lee, MD, PhD, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea, discusses the importance of HER2 immunohistochemistry testing for newly diagnosed patients with biliary tract cancer (BTC), particularly those with metastatic or locally unresectable disease, as HER2-positive patients have worse prognoses. HER2-positive patients require anti-HER2 agents in their treatment and incorporating HER2-targeting strategies into frontline treatment may provide more benefits. This interview took place during the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Meeting in Chicago, IL.

And we have recently published a paper saying that this kind of HER2-positive biliary cancer definitely needs anti-HER2 agents in their treatment journey. So I think moving this HER2-targeting strategy into the front line will give them more benefit. So I think it’s definitely needed.
