ESMO GI 2026 | Shared decision-making in the management of rectal cancer in older patients

David Sebag-Montefiore, MBBS, MRCP, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK, explores the importance of shared decision-making when determining the treatment and management pathway of older rectal cancer patients. Prof. Sebag-Montefiore highlights evidence showing the differing priorities of treatment for healthcare professionals and patients, with the former focusing on cancer outcomes and the latter focusing on quality of life and preserving sexual and bowel function. Management and treatment therefore require discussion between healthcare professionals and the patient to ensure the strategy is tailored to the individual. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer 2026 Congress in Munich, Germany.
