ESMO GI 2026 | How does P-32 microparticle brachytherapy compare with other locoregional techniques in uLAPC?

Michele Milella, MD, University of Verona, Verona, Italy, discusses how targeted intratumoral brachytherapy with phosphorus-32 (P-32) microparticles compares with external beam radiotherapy and stereotactic beam radiotherapy in unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer (uLAPC). Radiotherapy has not yet demonstrated a survival benefit when combined with chemotherapy for uLAPC, but does improve local control. Brachytherapy with P-32 demonstrates a potential advantage to conventional radiotherapy techniques by allowing a high delivery of radiation inside the tumor and as a beta emitter, P-32 does not damage surrounding tissue. Prof. Milella also discusses lesion selection and how the treatment approach can be tailored to the type of lesion. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer 2026 Congress in Munich, Germany.
