ESMO 2026 | Overcoming resistance to immunotherapy in lung cancer

Alessandra Curioni-Fontecedro, MD, Cantonal Hospital of Fribourg, Fribourg, Switzerland, discusses the major challenges faced by thoracic oncologists, including resistance to immunotherapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer. Dr Curioni-Fontecedro highlights the need for new combinations to transform “cold” tumors into “hot” tumors that respond to immunotherapy, and notes that ongoing studies are investigating ways to overcome resistance, including combining treatments that target the immune system and blood vasculature. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
