ESMO 2026 | Patient-reported evidence and the role of lived experience in cancer care

Antonella Cardone, Cancer Patients Europe, Brussels, Belgium, emphasizes the importance of maintaining control over the disease for patients with cancer, allowing them to lead a relatively normal life and reduce anxiety between scans, while also highlighting the value of patient and carer input in developing evidence through lived experience and patient preference studies. Regulatory bodies, such as the European Medicines Agency (EMA), are increasingly considering patient-provided evidence, which will hopefully become a standard procedure across joint clinical assessments and Health Technology Assessment (HTA) bodies in Europe. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
