ESMO 2026 | Importance of early detection and screening in lung cancer

James Reading, PhD, University College London, London, UK, discusses the importance of early detection and screening in improving outcomes for lung cancer patients, highlighting that screening programs such as CT screening can shift the presentation of the disease from late-stage to earlier stage, resulting in improved survival rates. Dr Reading notes that these programs can detect not only early cancers but also pre-invasive lesions, providing an opportunity for early detection and interception, and that understanding the mechanisms that convert pre-cancer into cancer can help identify targets for immunotherapies to prevent cancer development. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
