ESMO WCGIC 2021 | Implications of antibiotic consumption on early-onset CRC

Sarah Perrott, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, UK, examines the ramifications of an established link between early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) and antibiotic consumption. Due to widespread usage of antibiotics, it is difficult to establish a causative correlation between antibiotic consumption and CRC. Nevertheless, results from the study recommends reduced use of antibiotics, especially when excessive use can result in gut dysbiosis which itself can cause various medical issues including CRC. The findings of the study can additionally change the way patients are referred for secondary care, where including past use of antibiotics can optimize diagnosis and treatment. This interview took place at the ESMO World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer 2021.
