Academic History

Eric Lim, MD, is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at the Royal Brompton Hospital at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, UK. He is a Senior Lecturer and Reader of Thoracic Surgery and a Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Imperial College London. Prof. Lim studied Medicine at the University of Sheffield in Sheffield, UK, and specialized in cardiothoracic surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London, UK. He has also received an MSc in Medical Statistics from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, UK, and an MD for surgical research from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK.

Prof. Lim chairs the British Society Thoracic Surgery and Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery Guidelines on the Radical Management of Lung Cancer. Prof. Lim is a Council Member of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, a Member of the Steering of the Steering Committee of the British Thoracic Oncology Group, and a Panel Member of the UK Intercollegiate Specialty Board in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He also chairs the UK Thoracic Surgery Research Collaborative.

Speaking on lung cancer and neuroendocrine tumors

Prof. Lim’s leads research that focuses on diagnostic and predictive biomarkers in cancer, chiefly working with circulating tumor cells, circulating free DNA and RNA, with the goal of creating a blood test to accurately diagnose cancer.

Prof. Lim has a keen interest in mesothelioma and how novel immunotherapies here may impact surgical outcomes. He has led the VIOLET study that investigated the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) compared to open lobectomy for lung cancer. Prof. Lim has also led the MARS2 trial that studied whether the pleurectomy technique conferred a survival advantage for patients with Mesothelioma.
