BTOG 2019 | VIOLET: VATS vs. open lobectomy for lung cancer

The VIOLET study (ISRCTN13472721) is a large, multicenter, randomized trial investigating video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) vs. open lobectomy for lung cancer. We spoke to Eric Lim, MD, of the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, about the trial at the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) 2019 Annual Conference in Dublin, Ireland. Prof. Lim highlights the importance of comparing keyhole and open surgery in this setting, and explains how the surgeon’s themselves will perform 50% of the operations with each method.
