GU Cancers 2022 | US mortality trends for bladder cancer

Sophia Kamran, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, talks on the mortality trends for bladder cancer in the United States (US). A database crossing two decades was used to stratify bladder cancer mortality trends based on different variables such as race and regions within the US. Although there has been an overall decrease in bladder cancer mortality rates over the past 20 years, this was not demonstrated in all variables. For instance, the trend in mortality rates for patients who are Black have not shown a decrease. There were additional disparities observed in cities versus rural areas. Research is required to understand why these disparities in mortality rates are occurring and what can be done about these differences such that a decrease in mortality rates is demonstrated across all cohorts and regions. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Genitourinary Cancers Symposium 2022 in San Francisco, CA.
