ASCO 2023 | The challenges that patients may face when participating in shared decision-making

Mark Andrew Lewis, MD, Intermountain Healthcare, Murray, UT, talks on the challenges that patients may face when participating in shared decision-making, highlighting the “information paradox” faced by patients, where there is an overwhelming amount of medical information available to them. This includes general online searches and access to their medical records. The challenge becomes how to condense this vast amount of information into a manageable and understandable form for patients. Additionally, the limited time patients have with their oncologists is emphasized, highlighting the need to prioritize questions and effectively communicate important information within those limited minutes. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
