ASCO 2023 | The patients perspective of shared decision making

Mark Andrew Lewis, MD, Intermountain Healthcare, Murray, UT, discusses the shifting paradigms in medical decision-making and the patients perspective of shared decision-making in oncology, highlighting how the medical field has moved away from a paternalistic approach to a more patient-centered approach. However, there is a concern that the current trend towards à la carte medicine, where patients are solely responsible for choosing their treatment regimens, may not be ideal. Dr Lewis suggests the need to find a balance that respects patient autonomy while also recognizing the expertise of oncologists, emphasizing the importance of arriving at the right treatment decision collaboratively. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
