WCLC 2023 | Stigmas surrounding cancer in South Africa

Lauren Pretorius, Campaigning for Cancer, Randburg, South Africa, outlines the stigmas surrounding cancer is South Africa. General myths about cancer include the idea of certain treatment modalities being worse than the actual disease, or that cancer diagnoses are always terminal. The attitude to cancer in South Africa is also influenced by cultural stigmas, such as religious views towards surgeries in women or the belief that cancer is a “curse”. Ms Pretorius emphasises the importance of patient stories and educational campaigns in order to educate cultural leaders and the general public. This interview took place at the 2023 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) in Singapore, Singapore.
