WCLC 2023 | Facilitating the decision-making process for patients during lung cancer screening

David Baldwin, MD FRCP, Nottingham City Hospital, Nottingham, UK, describes his presentation on patients’ decision-making processes when faced with lung cancer screening. Across all diseases, explanations of screening are not personalized and are widely based on population studies. Although pictograms and other decision aids can be given to patients during consultations to explain the importance of lung cancer screening, the nuances behind certain figures are difficult to communicate. Dr Baldwin argues that focusing on a few key points in the consultation and allowing patients to ask questions can ameliorate the process; whilst this may not guarantee informed decision-making, he suggests this may be a more pragmatic solution that can benefit patients faced with lung cancer screening. This interview took place at the 2023 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) in Singapore, Singapore.
