EADO 2022 | The increased risk of basal cell carcinoma in outdoor workers

Swen Malte John, MD, PhD, Osnabrück University, Osnabrück, Germany, discusses the risk of basal cell carcinoma, including actinic keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma. the risk for acquiring such cancers are doubled in outdoor workers compared to the average population. The UV exposure in outdoor workers is above the recommended threshold levels for occupational exposure, which is 1 standard erythemal dose (SED) per square meter per day. Concerningly, construction workers in Europe have been demonstrated to get 6-8 SEDs on an average workday. This interview took place at the EADO 2022 congress.
