ESMO WCGIC 2023 | Evaluating the cost effectiveness of robotic surgery for rectal cancer

Jim Khan, MD, PhD, FRCS, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, Portsmouth, UK, comments on managing cost-related issues associated with robotic surgery, which can be prohibitively expensive for many surgeons worldwide. Initial purchasing and maintenance costs can make robotic equipment unaffordable, but efficient use can cut costs down. However, long-term benefits can be achieved when taking into account potential reduced recurrence and complications that patients may face when receiving the current standard of care. Eventual competition with other companies may also make robotic surgery more affordable in the future. This interview took place at the ESMO World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer (WCGIC) 2023 in Barcelona, Spain.
