SABCS 2023 | Remaining challenges associated with implementing AI in pathology

Carmen van Dooijeweert, MD, PhD, UMC Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands, discusses the challenges of digital pathology implementation. Approximately half of Dutch pathology labs work digitally, presenting a complex business case for digital adoption. While cost savings make digitalization appealing, challenges include the need for dedicated IT personnel and integration issues with the pathology archiving digital system (PACs). Currently, many algorithms lack seamless integration, forcing pathologists to switch between systems. Dr Van Dooijeweert emphasizes the importance of overcoming these challenges, particularly the need for smooth integration to avoid multiple separate apps. This interview took place at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) congress in San Antonio, TX.
