I think that’s a great question. I was specifically asked to highlight the toolbox of the future colorectal surgeon. So what I did is I asked several key opinion leaders from all around the world what they thought should be in the colorectal surgeon’s toolbox. And not surprisingly, a lot of the surgeons were mentioning knowledge of molecular biology, precision medicine, but also the increasing demands from a technological point of view. That’s one working with AI, and the other one is working with the robot. But what I thought was most interesting is that many of them said, in the view of this rise of the use of technology it’s actually what we need from people is to have great communication skills to put the patient at the center of the surgical treatment and to have empathy and compassion with the patients so I’m thinking that these types of communication skills will need extra emphasis not during training but also selecting our registrars to start with general surgical training.
