ASCO GI 2023 | SHEILD-RT: implementing machine learning in the clinic

Manisha Palta, MD, Duke University, Durham, NC, discusses findings from the SHIELD-RT study (NCT04277650), which assessed the role of machine learning algorithms in patients receiving radiotherapy. High risk patients, who were likely to require acute care, were identified with an algorithm, and were randomized to having the standard weekly appointments with their healthcare provider, or having bi-weekly appointments. Patients who had additional check-ups were less likely to require acute care, demonstrating the potential for machine learning to guide clinical care. This interview took place at the ASCO 2023 GI Symposium in San Francisco, CA.
