ESTRO 2021 | Proctectomy versus organ preservation in rectal cancer

Jean-Pierre Gerard, MD, Centre Antoine Lacassagne, Nice, France, discusses a propensity score matched cohort analysis comparing radical proctectomy with organ preservation in patients with rectal cancer. Outcomes of patients from the ACCORD12 trial (NCT00227747) and an additional single center organ preservation cohort receiving chemoradiotherapy and contact X-ray brachytherapy (CXB) were assessed. After analysis, the survival rate in the organ preservation cohort was lower due to a higher average cohort age but organ preservation produced 5-year clinical outcomes comparable to matched patients treated with surgery. This interview took place at the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) 2021.
