Dermato-Onco2024 | Future directions in personalized treatment approaches for melanoma

Piotr Rutkowski, MD, PhD, Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology, Warsaw, Poland, discusses how the future of melanoma treatment may unfold, with a focus on limiting the extent of surgery interventions. Surgery remains a central approach for melanoma treatment to date. Additional data is required to confirm the partial elimination of sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy based on gene expression profiling (GEP) for tumors. Future approaches may resemble breast cancer treatment, wherein preoperative therapy with a focus on one specific node may replace therapeutic lymph node dissection. Immunotherapy is the most effective treatment for melanoma but it is also important to consider preventative strategies. This interview took place at The European Congress on Dermato-Oncology 2024 in Vienna, Austria.
