ASCO GI 2026 | An overview of current treatment guidelines for appendix cancer

John Paul Shen, MD, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, comments on the treatment of appendix cancer, noting that due to its rarity, high-quality clinical trial data is limited, and thus the effectiveness of chemotherapy after surgery for early-stage patients was unclear. Research has shown patients with stage two or three appendix cancer tend to do well with surgery alone, leading to a shift away from recommending chemotherapy after surgery for these patients. This interview took place at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium in San Francisco, CA.
