ASCO 2023 | What are the possible effects maternal cancer during pregnancy have on the development of children?

Frederic Amant, MD, PhD, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, discusses the possible effects maternal cancer during pregnancy have on the development of children. A long-term follow-up study on children born to mothers with cancer during pregnancy has shown that their cognitive abilities, behavior, and attention functions are similar to those of children in the control population. These findings indicate that these children generally develop well. However, it is important to note that chemotherapy should be administered after the first trimester to minimize the risk of congenital malformations. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
