Laura Dawson, MD, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada, gives insight into who qualifies for stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in patients with colon cancer. Those with oligometastases and biomarkers like BRAF, wild-type p53, and KRAS mutations, indicate a better response to radiation. It is emphasized that SBRT should only be used when it is safe, feasible, and with a reasonable dose. However, it is not appropriate for those who have had prior radiation therapy and eligible for surgical resections. For patients with limited metastases, SBRT alone or in combination with other treatments can offer long-term survival benefits, particularly where thermoablation is less effective. This interview took place at 2024 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer Annual Congress in Munich, Germany.
