EAU 2023 | Effectiveness of photodynamic assessments in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer: real-life study

Rakesh Heer, PhD, FRCS(Urol), Newcastle University. Newcastle upon Tyne, London, discusses non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and the high rates of recurrence associated with intermediate or high-risk disease. Photodynamic assessments of the bladder were explored as a means to improve tumor clearance and reduce recurrence. While initial evidence suggested potential benefits, real-world clinical practice and standard management approaches, such as chemotherapy washes and BCG treatment, may have masked the observed effects. In response, a pragmatic study was designed to assess the effectiveness of photodynamic assessments in routine practice, considering generalizable inclusion criteria and up-to-date management protocols. This study represents one of the largest contemporary evaluations of this technology in real-life settings. This interview took place at the EAU congress in Milan, Italy.
