SABCS 2024 | Reevaluating sentinel node biopsy post-neoadjuvant treatment in breast cancer

Johannes Holtschmidt, MD, German Breast Group, Neu-Isenburg, Germany, comments on the evolving role of sentinel node biopsy in breast cancer patients after neoadjuvant systemic treatment. A significant shift in practice over the past decade has resulted in reducing axillary surgery, particularly in high-risk node-negative patients. Nodal metastasis detection rates are below 3% in patients with HER2-positive or triple-negative breast cancer following effective neoadjuvant therapy, prompting discussions on whether sentinel node biopsy remains beneficial in this context. This interview took place at the 2024 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) congress in San Antonio, TX.
