GU Cancers 2025 | Comparing the efficacy of TKI monotherapy versus TKIs with IO in nccRCC
Benjamin Maughan, MD, PharmD, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, comments on the role of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) monotherapy in non-clear cell renal cell carcinoma (nccRCC), The main arguments for using TKIs alone over TKIs with immunotherapy (IO) are the lack of comparative data showing that combination therapy is more effective, the increased toxicity and cost of combination therapies, and the potential for quality of life impairment. Sequential therapy, starting with TKI monotherapy, may be a more tolerable option for patients, allowing for the switch to immunotherapy patients progress on TKIs. This interview took place at the ASCO GU Cancers Symposium 2025 in San Francisco, CA.
