ESTRO 2026 | The gut microbiome as a prognostic marker of side effects following radiotherapy

Miguel Reis Ferreira, FRCR, MD, PhD, Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, shares insight into what can be learned from the gut microbiome regarding radiotherapy treatment outcomes. Currently, the gut microbiome can be considered a prognostic marker, indicative of expected side effects. In future, the microbiome may be more predictive if there is an understanding of how certain microbes and microbial functions increase or decrease following treatment intervention. This interview took place at the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology 2026 Congress in Stockholm, Sweden.
