BCC 2025 | Assessing the impact of bilateral oncoplastic surgery on PROs in breast cancer

Martin Heidinger, MD, University Hospital Basel, Basel, Switzerland, describes the effect of immediate symmetrizing oncoplastic surgery on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients with breast cancer. A retrospective study found no significant differences in outcomes between unilateral and bilateral surgery groups. However, bilateral surgery was associated with a higher risk of short-term surgical complications, which negatively impacted patient-reported outcomes. This interview took place at the 2025 St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Consensus Meeting in Vienna, Austria.
