Vanessa Wookey, MD, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA, discusses a Phase II investigator-initiated trial (NCT03548961) evaluating the feasibility of local excision following neoadjuvant FOLFOX in patients with node-negative low rectal cancer (RC). Organ preservation was possible in a majority of patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy and local excision. This approach suggests potential for organ preservation in node negative low RC, warranting further investigation to optimize outcomes and quality of life. This interview took place at 2024 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancers Annual Congress in Munich, Germany.
