APCCC 2024 | The role of digital rectal examination in modern prostate cancer staging

Declan Murphy, FRACS, FRCS, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia, discusses the role of digital rectal examination (DRE) in prostate cancer staging with advanced imaging techniques. DRE’s role in primary care is diminishing due to the effectiveness of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, DRE remains valuable for urologists and in regions with limited imaging access. It is also crucial for local staging, despite the rise of MRI and prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). This interview took place at the 2024 Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference (APCCC) in Lugano, Switzerland.
